It was a fascinating tribute by Google to change their icon for the day yesterday to feature the Rubik’s Cube. To celebrate its 40th anniversary of being in existence, Google created a fully functional digital Rubik’s Cube that you could play just by clicking your mouse. Though as cute as it was, it still brought back all those maddening memories of trying to solve the thing! Come to think of it, I never even got two sides completed…

If you’ve ever fretted over a Rubik’s Cube, finding yourself unable to put it down, you might find these stats interesting:

  • Mats Valk holds the world’s record of solving the cube in 5.5 seconds
  • Fakhri Raihaan holds the world’s record of solving the cube in 27.9 seconds…WITH HIS FEET!
  • Over 300 million cubes have been sold
  • One in seven people have played with a Rubik’s Cube

So basically 0ne-seventh of the world’s population has played with a Rubik’s Cube, and by “played” I mean “agonized over”. So, if you’ve still got your, go dig it out of your box of old toys you refuse to throw away, or take that “throwback” toy away from your kids and give it a go, because here you’ll find the instructions for how to solve the Rubik’s Cube.

PS. You might find that the instructions for how to solve the cube are actually more challenging that trying to solve the cube!
