Better Together recap!
Thanks to YOU, twenty senior citizens will feel a little less alone.
During February, Life 96.5 invited YOU to show love. Lutheran Social Services Better Together program matches volunteers with adults aged 65+ who are in need of extra friendship and support. Matches spend at least four hours per month with their older adult doing fun things – like going to a movie, grabbing a bite to eat or just sitting and talking.
Twenty may not sound like a huge response, but when added up – there will be more than 1,000 hours of newfound fellowship in the lives of older adults! Those 1,000 hours that would have otherwise been spent alone with many older adults feeling more and more disconnected from the community…more and more depressed and more and more hopeless. LSS is beyond thankful for this amazing response to the call to serve our neighbors in a meaningful and relational way.
The highlight of the month was a BINGO NIGHT with current volunteers and potential volunteers and older adults who are waiting. A new volunteer and older adult hit it off at BINGO night and are now meeting consistently through this program! What started as two strangers is now starting to become a needed friendship. Over 30 people, ranging in age from 3 to 90, enjoyed a fun night of meeting new people and building a sense of community.
So often throughout the past month, volunteers wrote on their applications how they felt they needed a connection to an older person just as much as older adults told us they were lonely. The blessings that will come to volunteers and older adults this coming year will be fun to watch unfold! We are so excited to see what the future holds – and we know everyone in the program will be BETTER now that they are TOGETHER. Thanks, Life 96.5 and your listeners for making such a meaningful impact in the lives of area seniors!
