Many of us look forward to the Thanksgiving meal with family and all the trimmings. For some of us, it might even become a bit of a binge. What if you were to embark on a different binge for Thanksgiving? This is a binge that won’t bulge your waistline or leave you feeling guilty. In fact, it’s good for your body, mind and soul. Since it takes at least 21 days to create a new habit, what if you committed to focusing on gratitude for 21 days? The 21 Day ThanksGiving Binge is a challenge to help you focus on giving thanks and adopting an attitude of gratitude.

Numerous benefits of gratitude

Studies consistently confirm the many health benefits of gratitude. According to a 2000 study by Emmons and Crumpler, people who regularly express gratitude have better physical health, more optimism, enhanced well-being, and help others more. Adopting an attitude of gratitude:

  • Improves energy, resiliency and immunity
  • Increases happiness
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Minimizes toxic emotions
  • Strengthens relationships
  • Improves sleep

In addition, it’s Biblical. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul tells us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Much to be thankful for

It’s easy to express thanks when things are going well in life — when a plan comes together, when health is restored, when relationships are mended.  Let’s look a little deeper and realize that there is always much to be thankful for:

  • Appreciating the blessings in our life. This is really the first level of gratitude; giving thanks for those things we count as blessings in our life.
  • Appreciating the things we take for granted. On those days that I’m impatient for the shower to get warm, I am reminded of the 780 million people who don’t have access to clean water (
  • Expressing appreciation to others. Once we’ve thought about being grateful, then it’s time to express our gratitude to other people, and to God.
  • Being grateful for the challenges, difficult situations. We take gratitude to a whole new level once we are able to be grateful for valleys of life. Remember Paul’s instruction about giving thanks in all circumstances? This is what we should strive for.

How to incorporate more gratitude in your day

  • Regularly pause to think about what you are grateful for. Do this in your mind or with a gratitude journal or a gratitude app.
  • Change your perspective.  Ask yourself, what could I be grateful for in this situation?
  • Use technology by adding a daily reminder on your phone/computer.
