You’ve heard the original “I Can Only Imagine”, but what do you think about MercyMe’s “updated” version…

With the release of I Can Only Imagine, we felt like we had a unique opportunity to create a new version of the song.  I’ve thought a lot over the years about if I could go back and redo ‘Imagine,’ how would I do it?  That’s not an opportunity you really get all that often.  So I kept thinking about what that song has meant to me – and to so many others – over the years.  It definitely came out of a difficult season and brought hope, but there’s something very melancholy about the way the song was produced.  I thought it’d be awesome to do a new version that was more of a celebration and opportunity to rejoice in the fact that we don’t have to imagine much longer.  I just thought that would also feel like a great way to tie in to the end of the movie when the credits are rolling – a song you kinda pump your fist to – like yes, this is our hope in Christ!  So that’s the direction we went… how I see ‘I Can Only Imagine’ these days versus when I first wrote it.” –Bart Millard (MercyMe)

Thanks Bart; this is STILL my favorite song to sing when I think of what I’ll do when I stand face to face with my Savior in my eternal home! I love this version, too, for it’s upbeat tempo that spurs on the hope we have in Christ!

Great movie! Great new version of perhaps one of the most amazing songs ever written. The lyrics, music, and the voice. Few combinations come together to make such an incredible song that would touch so many people. This is more than a song, it is a part of people’s lives, experiences, and memories… I’m sure the guys get a little tired of “always having to discuss this particular song”, but I’d like to say to the whole band; THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS GEM WITH THE REST OF US! IT IS SO SPECIAL TO SO MANY PEOPLE. I appreciate your talents very much and thank you for not giving up during those tough years. The world would have missed an amazingly beautiful song! I pray that each member of the band has been as blessed through this song as the rest of us! Miles, husband and father of 2

Sadly… not a fan of the new version of the song… it misses … something

  • I agree it’s more of a celebration to the homecoming we are waiting for. I love the first version, like many others it really touched me! The newer version brings a totally different feeling…like a celebration instead of crying about death. THANK YOU
